Statement of intent

For my project, “Undergrowth”, I focused on the artists, Rachel Dien, who did plaster casts, Robert Peek, who used staged photographs of flowers and plants, Al Mefer, who changed the colour of his images to make the subject matter of his pictures look unnatural and Jacek Gonsalves who makes cyanotypes.

To further my work, I think I would like to stick with photography as my experiments for my artist research using photography were more successful than the other mediums I tried. However, I am not opposed to trying other mediums similar to what I have done, such as photograms as I would like to explore all aspects of photographic processes, both contemporary and historical.

Within my experiments, I would like to try doing macro photography of leaves and flowers and focus on the detail within these. This is slightly inspired by Al Mefer as he takes close-up images of leaves.

Furthermore, I think that my photographs for Robert Peek were successful, so I’d like to further this by creating more staged photos of plants, maybe presenting them in different ways, for example, making shapes out of them.

Next, I’d like to focus on raw photography of plants, but I could possibly use props, such as a lens ball to further my experiments to see how they adjust the image. To further add to this I could try some black-and-white images or use film to see how these can change the detail of the plants or alter the feel of them, for example, if it makes them look more eerie. I could also edit these photos to include double exposure, similar to what I did with my Robert Peek, except these photos are going to be done in a real-world setting rather than staged.

To further my work, I would like to do some video work. For example, I’d like to take a time-lapse of a flower blossoming then dying, or videos of plants moving in a field.
