Forest Images

In these images, I chose to focus on the undergrowth in forests. I really like how these photos came out, I adjusted the brightness and contrast on them to add detail or brighten them if they were too dark. I really like the images with the river in them as they show how all the plants look together from afar. Moreover, I like the images of the ferns as the lighting works well for them and shows the detail within. To further my work I did some digital edits. I first tried changing the colour to be grayscale and adjusting the brightness and contrast to see if it affected the feel of the image, or made it more detailed, and I think that these pieces were successful.

I think that these pieces are nice, however, they don't really focus on undergrowth or give the darker more eerie feel that I am looking for. However, I still think they have some aspects of undergrowth, it is just not the main focus of the images, so as I go on through my experiments I will develop this throughout the photos that I take. Moreover, I think that I could play around with lighting in my later experiments to see how that alters the feel of the image and how it affects the look of the undergrowth.

This is one of my most successful pieces as I feel like the main focus is the path of undergrowth in between. I like how the background slowly fades out which creates an element of mystery. I also like how the green slowly gets lighter the further back you look in the image. I have similar images to this one throughout with different parts of the images showing different patterns of wood and moss on the forest floor, or ones where trees have fallen over and showing how that adjusts the forest itself.

To further my experiments, I tried to play around with lighting, focusing on how the natural lighting from the sun adjusts the undergrowth below and how it can add to an image and focus on certain aspects of the image. Especially in the two images of the forest floor as the surrounding area where the light hits the undergrowth is fully or mostly dark, placing the main emphasis on the area of undergrowth impacted by the lighting. I feel like these are successful in showing the undergrowth in a unique way and shows how other factors, such as broken sunlight can adjust how it looks.

To further develop my experiments I looked at how the undergrowth added to the nature surrounding it, such as rivers and hills. I think to an extent these photos were successful and fit into my project nicely, however, they don't particularly look special or stand out compared to some of the other photographs that I have taken, so in some ways, these photos are more basic than my previous work.

Digital Edits

For my digital edits, I decided to play around with grayscale images. I used images that were not particularly interesting or images I thought would've looked better in grayscale as it adds more depth to the image. For this I decided to play around with the different grayscale tones, whether I preferred lighter more white grey images or more black grey images and from this I found that darker grayscale images tended to encompass more detail as having the image darker created more depth and outlined the detailed and more obvious parts of the image which held the focus of the image. However, the lighter grayscale images lacked detail and depth as the whole image was more or less the same lightness, with a few darker bits here and there, so I think that my darker grayscale images were more successful.

Black and white, adjust brightness and contrast if needed.
